Autism / Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) / Pervasisve Developmental Disorder (PDD)

 

Autism is a brain development disorder that is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior, all starting before a child is three years old. This set of signs distinguishes autism from milder autism spectrum disorders (ASD) such as pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS).

 

For many years autism was rare - occurring in just 5 children per 10,000 live births. However, since the early 1990's, the rate of autism has increased exponentially around the world with figures as high as 60 per 10,000. Boys outnumber girls four to one. In 2007, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with autism.

 

What causes autism is not agreed upon.  There has never been a genetic disease epidemic.  Consequently, I believe it is appropriate to conclude that environmental factors are the cause of this dramatic increase.  My personal view is that we are all a dance between our genetics and our environment.  That means some environmental factors will have no effect on one individual at a given level of exposure or an entirely different effect than on another individual. 

 

One of the more controversial environmental factors is vaccines.  The pharmaceutical industry has a vested interest in vaccines, i.e. this is one of their major sources of income.   They have convinced the government that vaccines are so important that they should have no responsibility for adverse outcomes.  Below is graph related to the MMR vaccine and autism:

There appears to be a form of autism that children are born with that may be largely related to genetics and perhaps is different from the dramatic increases over the last 10 to 20 years.  Determining the interferences and correcting them following Dr. Linda’s Model of Health is how she approaches children with autism / ASD.
